A new chapter in precision machining has begun with the arrival of the Doosan Lynx CNC Lathe, now officially up and running its first parts. This compact yet powerful turning center made its debut on the shop floor this month, marking a significant upgrade in capability and efficiency. The Lynx series is known for its rigid construction, high-speed turret indexing, and ultra-fast rapids, making it ideal for high-volume, high-accuracy production. After a smooth startup and calibration process, the machine homed in on its axes and loaded its first program—cutting a batch of stainless steel with impressive consistency and surface finish.

Operators noted the machine’s quiet operation, responsive slide movement, and intuitive controls, all of which contributed to a seamless first run. The parts produced met all dimensional tolerances, confirming the lathe’s readiness for full-scale production. This milestone not only boosts the shop’s output but also opens the door to more complex geometries and tighter tolerances. With its servo-driven turret and robust spindle design, the Doosan Lynx is poised to become a cornerstone of the facility’s machining operations.

Capacity and Material Handling

The Lynx 2100LSYB offers a maximum turning diameter of 11.8 inches when using cut blanks. Its 2.68-inch spindle bore supports bar stock up to 2.625 inches in diameter when used with an automatic bar loader. This upgrade expands LV Swiss’s ability to work with larger raw material, providing greater flexibility for customer needs.

NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership Article

The Challenge

LV Swiss sells to automotive and aerospace companies that expect a Gauge Repeatability and Reproducability (Gauge R&R) to be completed regularly. Repeatability and Reproducability are two important factors that show how capable you are at measuring specifications; Gauge R&R is a statistical tool that measures the amount of variation in the measurement system arising from the measurement device and the people taking the measurement. LV Swiss wanted to standardize their measurement evaluation process to ensure they were maintaining best practices and meeting customer expectations. Without a standardized measurement process, a company cannot rely on the data they are collecting. If you cannot repeat or reproduce measurements your data will never be reliable.

MEP’s Role

The University of Utah Manufacturing Extension Partnership (UUMEP) Center conducted a two-day, hands-on training course around measurement system evaluations, also known as gauge repeatability and reproducibility. UUMEP worked with LV Swiss to customize the course curriculum, identify practical examples, and develop a future state for their data collection. Their quality team now follows a standardized process for assessing their measurement systems.The training was particularly beneficial to LV Swiss because it allowed them to continue their daily operations and rely on outside expertise to broaden their organizations knowledge. They were also able to leverage and implement the industry best practices shared by the MEP.
